Growth Notes #6

Growth Notes: July 28 – August 17

Things I read, watched, listened to, or noted down.

Reading

  1. How Social Media Shortens Your Life Breaks down how the cost of social media isn’t just time spent online, but how it reshapes thought patterns even when we’re offline.

  2. Flounder Mode Story of Kevin Kelly who is a unique builder. He doesn’t think in outputs but rather focuses on direction, not destination. Highlights the value of making things with your hands when thoughts feel unclear.

  3. What are they carrying Prickly oxheart has become one of my favorite writers lately. In this piece, he argues that assuming good intent towards people opens space for actual resolution. Shifts the reaction from defensiveness to curiosity, especially in messy human interactions.

  4. Face It, You’re a Crazy Person This is an interesting piece on unpacking why people are drawn to strange jobs or paths. When someone matches their quirks with the right outlet, it becomes a strength.

Listening

  1. Art of Enterprise Sales Fascinating journey of current ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott. How he landed his first sales job at Xerox by which no cliche background, mailed physical letters, pushed through. Loved his approach on "Always be on loose", talking to customers and more.

  2. Lex Fridman with John Carmack Been spending sometime lately learning how about things on in VR space and ended up listening bunch of podcasts. And one thing that really resonated was the desire to create a better alternate world inside the headset. Also, watched Lex's podcast with Mark inside Metaverse and how in 3 years Lex's perspective changed from not thinking about doing remote interviews to being aww struck with the experience of VR and Quest. Gives me hope on how technology can evolve.

  3. The Craft – Avi & Anu A great podcast that i was hooked to the entire time. Covers really well about creative independence, building for fun, and not over-attaching to outcomes. Highlights how chasing attention or external validation often leads to burnout. Also questions the default paths people choose and encourages unrestricted exploration.

Watching

  1. Clippy: The movie: Went into the rabbit hole of learning how the tool Clippy by Microsoft was created and ended up watching this trailer on the movie they created. Really fun to watch especially in days like these when we are uncovering so many new things with AI.
